Attic Adventure Land

This has probably been the most interesting Friday night I have ever had.  I went on an adventure!

So... there are some things around my house that have been bugging me, BAD.  For one when I bought this house it had all fluorescent lights and that was fine.  But over time the ballasts started going bad so my house has just gotten darker and darker.  I REALLY wanted to switch to some other kind of fixtures, (ones that I could use LED bulbs in), but with the placement and stuff I just don't see it happening.  Not without re-wiring a bunch of stuff and having a bunch of gnarly holes in the ceiling.  So I ended up deciding to get a couple of new fluorescent fixtures.  I need to replace a lot more than two, but this will just have to be an on-going project I guess.

Shaun grew up doing wiring so switching out those fixtures wasn't really a problem.  They probably took 10 or 15 minutes each.  But then we came to the second thing on my list that was really bugging me:  my poop fan died.  🙁  It died probably a year or more ago, but having the money to fix things isn't easy so I let it ride.  But today I decided was the day I got a new poop fan.  😃

I bought a small cheapie fan that looked like it would fit where the old one was.  Shaun got up there and started taking the old one down, but it didn't take long for us to realize that one of us was gonna have to go in the attic.  I have never been in an attic before, but I wasn't afraid of going.  As it turns out he wouldn't have fit in the area where the fan needed to go, anyway.  So.  Up the ladder I went.

Turns out it was nothing like I dreamed it would be.  I have had recurring dreams of having another floor in the attic.  Like a second floor with rooms.  And fish tanks for whatever reason.  So yeah.  Nothing like that, but that's ok.

It was dark and there were cobwebs everywhere.  And rat poops.  And the smell of rat pee made me really miss all of my dearly departed rodents.  So I guess I have rats, but I don't mind.  As long as they don't eat my important stuff I guess we're cool.  They need somewhere to live, too.

So I get up there, creepy crawl into the cool darkness of the attic and make my way to the fan.  It took WAYYY too long to unscrew the old one.  Two of the screws were angled down and I just couldn't get my screwdriver in there to get them out like I needed to.  I have no idea how those got put in that way.

Finally, we got it undone then Shaun handed me up the new fan and it was TOO BIG.  By like a quarter of an inch.  😳  And there were beams on both sides so sawing those would have probably been a bad idea.  So I was like, "Can you just put the new motor in the old casing?"  And then he's all like, "Maybe.  I'll try."  So extremely long story a little shorter here he eventually does it and we get it installed and IT WORKS.  GO US!  😃  YAY POOP FAN!

The thing is that took a while.  So I spent like two very uncomfortable hours in the attic.  My nose and throat got all dusty.  I had to pee.  But I was too stubborn to just come out and then go back in.  LOL  So that's what I get.

While I was up there I found a souvenir.  I have no idea how it got there, but I found a little notebook calendar thing.  It is black with colorful zodiac signs on it.  At least that's what I thought was on it.  I only had a flashlight with me.  I'll go look at it after I clean up some.  Maybe I'll even post a photo of it.  LOL  Unfortunately, it was blank (as far as I could tell), but that's ok.  Still an interesting little find.  I will admit to hiding little treasures in my house when I'm doing work on it for someone else to find - hopefully many years from now.  Gotta make life interesting, right?

For the record we put a new light fixture in the bathroom and despite how much I cleaned it earlier this week it really doesn't look clean now.  Not only because of the fan mess, but holy shit it was so dim in there I couldn't see the dirt.  I am fighting urges to go and clean it now.  Unfortunately, I gotta get to Wal-Mart so the bathroom will just have to wait.

BOOSH!  That was my night.  I feel fucking accomplished.  😃
