Shadow just found a baby hummingbird in the driveway.
Shadow just found a baby hummingbird in the driveway. It's got feathers, but not a full set. I offered our feeder to it and it didn't drink so we put it in a tree out front where we think they nest. We read that the mom's still feed them so we're going to keep an eye on it and hopefully it'll be ok. If not I'll see if there is a rescue around here for them.

Update on Mr. Robin:
Update on Mr. Robin:
"Good morning Blu,
Yes, I personally picked him up from Dr. Haley Burke at Alford Avenue Vet Clinic a couple of days ago. He appears to have run into something (maybe a window or a car), as he seems to be pretty out of it. He isn't eating very well on his own, so we are hand feeding him hourly to make sure that he gets his nutrients. Hopefully with a little time and TLC, we will begin to see some improvements! Thank you so much for checking up on this little guy!
Best,
Scottie Jackson
Director of Education and Outreach"

I found this friend on my way to get some coffee.
I found this friend on my way to get some coffee. He can fly, but seems to be hurt because he didn't fly - even when cars were getting really close to him. He only flew low to the ground and for short bursts to get away from me.
I have called Oak Mountain and am awaiting their call back. Assuming that they will take him is there anyone who can help me with transport? I'm already late for work and truth be told I haven't slept enough to be ok to drive that far. I would probably fall asleep at the wheel and kill us both. 🙁 Someone please help me help him.
P. S. That's a feather stuck on the side of his face. I haven't tried to remove it because I don't want to stress him further. He's resting in a box away from all of the other kids right now.

Sad news.
Sad news. Edgar had to be put to sleep. 🙁 The vet found multiple fractures in both of his legs. She said that if he was standing when I got him and then stopped, she would suspect a calcium deficiency, but she doesn't understand why since me AND the person who had him before were supplementing him with it. Maybe something was wrong and he just couldn't absorb it.
In any case, it didn't seem possible to fix all of that. So, rest in peace, little buddy. You were really fun to have around. ❤

Still waiting for Edgar updates.
Still waiting for Edgar updates. Last time I called, he is still being observed. He's still eating, so that's good. ❤
So... Edgar has a broken leg. 🙁
So... Edgar has a broken leg. 🙁 We are not sure how long it's been that way. Nerve damage is the concern. If he can be patched up, he will be. And if not, he will be humanely euthanized. I will keep everyone posted.
I actually got to speak to Dr. Burke today, and we share the same view about wildlife going to the proper facilities for care. She assured me that if he survives, he will go to the wildlife center. All wildlife taken to AMC will. So that is a bit of good news, at least.
Edgar update:
Edgar update:
His condition is the same this morning. I am hesitantly taking him to Animal Medical Center. They have a vet who can take him by the Alabama Wildlife Center on her way home. My worry is that he'll end up at the museum instead. I will call and check on him later to see where he ended up.

🙁 Edgar's got me worried.
🙁 Edgar's got me worried. He was fine last night, but now it seems that his legs aren't working and he's not as energetic or hungry. I called the vet, but they were rather unhelpful. I'm calling a proper rehab center now. Hopefully, I can get him there in time for him to be helped. I have NO IDEA what's going on. 🙁

IamEdgarFEEDME!
IamEdgarFEEDME!
He is so funny when he's really hungry. He gets all bouncy and flappy and squawky. LOL It's adorable!
I just noticed when I was taping this that he's got a crusty foot. He tends to go and lay down after he eats, and he just poops, and then lays there. I change his paper towels often. I don't know what else to do to prevent that. I read that in the wild, he'd be hanging his butt over the edge of the nest to drop bombs. LOL But I don't have a nest. Maybe that's the problem.
I have never had to do this before, but... I wonder if it's ok to wash a bird... At least the on the feet. I will have to check into that.

Edgar is growing FAST!
Edgar is growing FAST! His feathers look a lot nicer. He's attacking the tongs when I feed him. "PUT THIS ALL THE WAY DOWN MY THROAT HURRY." LOL It won't be long until I can let him go. Will try to get some good photos tomorrow. 🙂

And for you specials that I trust:
And for you specials that I trust:
I got a little mockingbird fledgling. He'll probably only need to be with me for a few days. His name is Edgar. Little baby birds who are getting their feathers are the damn cutest thing I've ever seen. LOL I'll get photos of him tomorrow, as well as better ones of Howie. ❤

Creature post!
Creature post! 🙂 I found a spider and her 50 babies hanging on my wall. SOOO cute! 😃 But I hear a little scuffling / flapping going on so I have to take part of the wall down (it won't disturb the spider family, thank goodness). I'm afraid it's a little baby bird. 🙁 I always try to get to them so they don't die, but I don't always know they are there. Make some noise, little ones. I will totally help you! ❤

Who’s that flapping at my door?
A baby bird.
It's insane. I took my dogs out to the pen, I came back in and was checking on my rats, and I heard something at the door. I opened it and a baby bird flopped in. No shit. So I'm trying not to touch it and get it back outside and when I finally do it hops towards the dog pen. I was just like, "Nooo!" But then I noticed the unfortunate soul who was already in there. Yeah - another baby bird. The dogs were of course harassing it... it's missing some feathers, but it has no open wounds. I don't know if it has any broken bones... Anyway, I snatched it up and caught the other little shit who was hopping all over. He was probably headed off to get eaten by a cat. 😳
So now I have two baby birds. I don't know where the hell they came from. They're big enough that they have feathers, but they're not flying yet. Also I'm still really worried about the one who was with the dogs. The vets can't help me, animal control can't help me, and the museum is closed. (And lucky for me this is a long weekend). /sarcasm I don't know what to do. I have them in a warm, dark, quiet place. I hope some rest will do them good while I figure out what to do. Any suggestions?

Little Bird
Sooo... yesterday when I got off from work I stopped by my mom's house to pick up my son. She handed me this:
She said she found it on a mound of dirt. We looked for its nest to no avail. She has cats and dogs so leaving it out there would have meant certain death. Plus it was sort of chilly that evening... so, I took the little shit home. I have heat lamps all over because of our reptiles and spiders and also various kinds of food because of our array pets.
Anyway I took it home and tried to feed it. It appeared not to be interested. It was the late evening so I imagine that the poor baby was tired. I just put it near a lamp and hoped for the best. Morning came and it still wouldn't eat. Knowing that I couldn't feed it every hour or so due to my jobs I began looking for someone to take it. I called the Museum of Natural History and they gave me the names of a few people who rehabilitate wildlife in the area. I called around and a police officer in the area met me at around 9:30 am. By then the baby was opening his beak - he was ready for breakfast. 😁
The officer said that he had an incubator and some different things to feed him so I sent the little one with him. I figured he had a better chance of survival with someone who knew what they were doing. I'm wishing him the best!
